The Dermal Roller (also known as a skin roller or microneedle roller) is a revolutionary hand-

held device which has the ability to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin to

promote healthier skin cells in the body. Using 200 extremely fine medical-grade needles,

the dermaroller creates microchannels in your skin which trigger the body's natural healing

process to create new, healthier tissue to replace the imperfections of older skin. By renewing your skin cells regularly, you will be able to treat common problems we experience as we age such as wrinkles, skin scars (including acne scars), uneven skin, stretch marks (usually developed after pregnancy),  or it can simply be used to create smoother skin.

AM I SUITABLE TO HAVE DERMAROLLER?

Dermaroller is suitable for most skin types.  Darker skins that develop hyperpigmentation after injury should avoid dermal roller.  Dermal roller should not be used if you have an active skin infection, new acne break out, cold sores or recent, still healing scarring at the site to be treated.

Dermal skin needling is excellent to treat:

  • Acne scarring

  • Photodamaged skin

  • Facial lines and wrinkles

  • Stretch marks

It can be used over the face, neck, decolletage and body areas too.

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE I BOOK MY APPOINTMENT?

You should consider the timing of the treatment around any important social events as you may be quite pink for 24-48 hours afterwards. You should avoid sunbeds, sunburn and alcohol to reduce the risk of post procedure side effects and

You should be realistic about what improvements you will achieve personally and over time as every face is different and every person will get different responses.

WHAT HAPPENS AT MY APPOINTMENT?

At your first appointment you will complete a medical questionnaire to make sure you are suitable to have this treatment, it is very important to complete this truthfully and comprehensively to ensure your safety and to obtain the best results.  This information is held confidentially in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1990.  At follow up appointments you must inform us if any of your medical history or medication has changed.  Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and a topical numbing cream thickly applied to the treatment area for approximately 20 minutes.  The numbing cream will then be removed and skin sanitised with an alcohol solution.  You may have additional serums used during the dermal roller procedure to gain maximum benefits. Serums include vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and many other anti oxidants. Your skin will be assessed to choose the best size needles for your treatment. These vary between 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm & 3mm. The dermal roller will be rolled over the skin many times to create pinprick bleeding and micro channels.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?

This is extremely important that you follow this advice to get the best results.  No results can be guaranteed as every face in the world is different, but follow these guidelines to get the best results.

You may be quite pink from the procedure and skin will feel wet from the serums. You must not apply make up for at least 24 hours to enable the tiny microchannels to close and begin the repair process. You should also avoid swimming, saunas or any activity which may increase the risk of infection.

You should avoid sun exposure and sunbeds as the skin will be sensitive and tender.  You may cleanse your skin using tepid water. Your skin will feel tight and there may be some flaking of skin during the healing process too. You may resume your usual skincare routine 48 hours post procedure. We recommend using a high SPF 50 to protect the new healing skin for at least one week afterwards.

You may also purchase a home use dermal roller kit to continue using between medical treatments.  Home kit needle size is 0.2mm.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO SKIN NEEDLING?

There are no permanent side effects however there are several well known minor side effects that are temporary and DO NOT require any intervention and DO NOT need to be reported to the clinic.

Bruising, avoid consuming alcohol for 48 hours before and after treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.

Infection, the skin may feel itchy, oozing, pus may be evident, skin may feel hot and you may feel unwell and have a temperature.  This has never happened at AB Medical UK and the risk is very small if you adhere to aftercare advice. However if you are concerned you may be developing an infection, please contact the clinic where we can assess and provide treatment if required.

Hyperpigmentation, only a risk with fitzpatrick skin types 5-6.  Most clients who have these skin types will be aware if they are at risk of this.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY RESULTS?

Again, everyone is different but usually by 4-12 weeks you will notice the skin tightening and visible improvements to skin texture and scarring. You may need a course of treatments to achieve the best results and maintenance dermal roller treatments once or twice a year thereafter to maintain collagen and elastin production.

WILL ALL MY LINES AND WRINKLES DISAPPEAR?

Some clients lines do completely disappear but some may need other supporting treatments to improve them or in some cases very deep lines where the skin is loose, will never be completely removed using non surgical procedures.

WHEN WILL I BOOK IN FOR MY NEXT TREATMENT?

It is possible just to have one Dermal roller treatment and you can expect noticeable results from that.  However, for optimum impact, we generally recommend a course of 3-6 sessions, 6 weeks apart.

IVE HEARD DERMAL ROLLER CAN BE USED IN OTHER AREAS IS THIS TRUE?

Yes, Dermal Rolling can not only be used on the face, but almost any body area.  The area being treated will be assessed at your appointment as each body area requires different needle sized rollers to achieve maximum results.
